Art Off the Rails

Mapping Art Across NYC’s Subway Lines

"Art Off the Rails" is an interactive look at public art scattered across MTA NYC Transit stations, recognized as a winning project in the MTA Data Challenge. This map shows how art is entwined into the everyday commutes of New Yorkers. Each station appears as a circle on a subway map, color-coded by line. Light and dark circles mark stations with or without artworks, while larger circles highlight stations with more pieces to see. Click on a station to see details about each piece—the title, artist, and materials all pop up in the information box on the left. In the rush of everyday life, it's easy to miss the finer details around us. Between busy schedules and endless to-do lists, we often overlook these quiet moments of beauty woven into our routines—especially on a crowded train platform. This map invites you to pause, take a closer look, and perhaps find something new in the familiar paths we travel each day.
